A pattern I used to use is something like:

arch/arm/dts/imx8mp-frdm-upstream.dts

which gets included by:

arch/arm/dts/imx8mp-frdm.dts

This way you can drop the upstream easily once the dts/ folder was
synced by just adapting the #include path within the
arch/arm/dts/imx8mp-frdm.dts.
